HIV Testing

How to test for HIV

The test for HIV is a simple blood test.

HIV testing can be done in the sexual health clinic. A healthcare professional will talk to you about your risk and they can advise on the best time to test.

If you test positive for HIV, you will be provided with care and support by our dedicated HIV team.

The earlier HIV is detected, the more likely it is that treatment will be successful. Often people infected with HIV are unaware they have the infection. It is really important that if you have had any potential risks e.g unprotected sex with someone whose HIV status is unknown to you or who is HIV positive you should have a HIV test.

If you have had unprotected sex with someone you think may have HIV it may be necessary to be prescribed Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEPSE).

To arrange a test you can attend a walk in clinic or contact 0300 421 6500 for an appointment.
